Whiplash Occurs From Car Collisions, Sports Accidents And Other Traumas
Do you have headaches or neck pain that started after you were in a car accident? You may have whiplash, especially if your car was hit from behind. The pain from whiplash may not start until several hours or even days after the accident.
Whiplash is an injury to the neck resulting from a forceful back and forth motion of the head, much like cracking a whip. It occurs most often from car accidents where a person has been hit from behind, causing the head to snap back, then forward. But it also happens in contact sports like football and from any trauma that causes the head to suddenly snap back and forth.
The sudden, forceful snapping motion can injure the vertebrae, discs, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves in the neck, causing pain, stiffness and a host of other symptoms.
Symptoms Of Whiplash
The symptoms of whiplash include:
• Neck pain and stiffness of the neck
• Restricted range of motion of the neck
• Pain when you move your neck from side to side or forward and back
• Headaches, usually starting at the base of the skull and radiating towards the forehead
• Numbness or tingling, usually in the arms
Some people also experience ringing in the ears, blurred vision, irritability, memory problems, sleep problems, difficulty concentrating and depression.
